I commenced this blog in 2017 as I was originally chasing our Swedish and Jersey mariner paternal ancestors... but it's evolved from there.  This is a blog about all our ancestors - both Paternal and Maternal.

I look forward to hearing from any fellow descendants with stories or perhaps photographs.

Family Tree to 2-great grandparents

Whilst the below Tree shows the 16 2 x great grandparents, we have evidence to support 32 of our 3 x great grandparents.


Ethnicity Estimate from Ancestry

From the "Country of birth" Family Tree it is almost spot on.  Our maternal side is a mix of Ireland and England.  Our paternal side is Swedish, Scottish and Jersey, Channel Islands.

The genetic tree contains only those ancestors for whom you have received some of their DNA. Below is the tree that shows confirmed DNA ancestors.  It is pleasing that most ancestral lines show DNA connections.

Getting Started: A Life in Uniform Begins Bert kicked off his military career on 26 January 1911, joining the Permanent Royal Australian Field Artillery (RAFA) in Melbourne. Clearly a standout from the start, he climbed the ranks and by 1 August 1913, he was promoted to Bombardier—a sign of things to come. 1954: Nana Romeril meets her Swedish family

Josephine Annie Romeril (nee Brudus) - 1896 to 1966 Josephine, who we knew as Nana Rom, was born in South Melbourne, Victoria to Ada Jane Nixon (1862 to 1923) and Johan Magnus Brudus (1852 to 1906).   She was the youngest of 4 daughters and apparently was very close to her Dad.   Ada Jane Nixon and Johan Magnus Brudus   with Josephine Annie in 1896 Johan was a mariner and had sailed from Lilla Horn on the island of Oland, Sweden in 1871.  He arrived in Sydney as a Able Seaman on the SS Barcoo in 1872.  He sailed the east coast of Australia until 1892 when the family settled in Melbourne and he became a labourer.  Nana Rom remembers that her parents were unhappy together and her father was homesick for his Swedish family.  In 1905, he disappeared and we discovered many years later that he threw himself in the Swan River in Perth, in despair, whilst on his way back to Sweden.   However, his story is for another post.  This story is about ...
