Ada Jane NIXON b1862-1923

Ada Jane Nixon was born on December 26, 1862, in Castlereagh Street, Sydney, New South Wales, to Ann Sophia May and William Henry Nixon. Her early years were spent in Paddington, and she was baptised at St Matthais Church, Paddington on January 6, 1863.

On April 5, 1887, at the age of 24, Ada Jane Nixon married Johan Magnus Brudus at "Liskeard" in Paddington, New South Wales. The couple later moved to Adolphus Lane, Balmain, Sydney, where their daughter Mildred Ada was born on May 23, 1889.

In April 1890, Ada Jane embarked on a journey on the ship "Arawatta" with her infant daughter, as her husband, Johan, served as a crew member. Sadly, their daughter Josephine Annie, born in September 1890, passed away on June 13, 1891. The family was residing at 18 Northumberland Street, South Melbourne, Victoria, when their daughter Annie Christine was born on December 8, 1892. Tragically, Annie Christine died - she had bronchitis -on June 3, 1894, at the age of one.

In December 1894, Ada visited her parents in Sydney aboard the ship "Wodonga" with her surviving daughter, Mildred. As her parents died in 1897 and 1898, perhaps it was to see them one last time?

Ada and Johan’s daughter, Josephine Annie, born on January 10, 1896, at 5 Market Street, South Melbourne, Victoria, was the couple's last child.

By 1905-1906, Ada and Johan were living at 251 York Street, Emerald Hill, South Melbourne.

However, on January 12, 1906, Johan sailed to Fremantle, Western Australia on the “Coolgardie”, expecting Ada and the family to join him. Distraught by her absence, Johan tragically took his own life on January 17, 1906, in Perth, Western Australia, at the age of 53.

The following email was received in 2013 with explanation of Johan's death:

Ada Jane Nixon found solace again when she married James Alexander Beck on April 21, 1906, in Melbourne, Victoria. The couple lived at various addresses, including 151 York Street, Emerald Hill, South Melbourne, 266 Moray Street, Melbourne South, and 66 Thomson Street, South Melbourne. In 1919, they resided at 14 Cobden Street, South Melbourne, where James worked as a Carter.

Ada Jane Beck, formerly Nixon, passed away on November 19, 1923, at the Homeopathic Hospital in South Melbourne, Victoria, due to pneumonia and cardiac arrest. She was 60 years old.

Ada was laid to rest at Coburn Cemetery, Melbourne, on November 22, 1923, in the Salvation Army Section P, Grave Number 105. Her life encompassed joy, tragedy, and resilience, leaving behind a story of love, loss, and the strength to rebuild.

Our paternal great grandmother, Ada Jane Nixon's life reflects the resilience of individuals in the face of personal loss and the ability to find love and rebuild. Her journey encompassed the highs of marriage and motherhood, coupled with the lows of losing children and the tragic death of her first husband. Her subsequent remarriage with James Alexander Beck marked further chapters
