Our Family History Journey
Our extended family has always had a strong interest in our ancestors and our family history. Family stories have been an important part of our growing up, passed down through the generations and often sparking our curiosity about the people who came before us.
I followed in my mother’s footsteps and inherited much of her research. In those early days, researching our family history was a very different process. Mum corresponded with people overseas by aerogram, patiently sending letters across the world and waiting weeks, sometimes months, for replies. Every new piece of information was something to treasure.
Over the past few years, the internet has transformed family history research. Records that once seemed almost impossible to access can now be found with a few clicks, and websites, digitised archives and online databases have opened up new avenues of discovery.
And so the family history continues. What Mum began with letters and aerograms, we can now build upon with the remarkable resources available online — uncovering new names, new stories and sometimes even branches of the family we never knew existed.
Passing the Stories On
For the past eight years, my great-granddaughter has been a regular visitor and, in the process, the happy recipient of many a family story. Whenever I am researching our family history, she has often been nearby, listening to the names, relationships and stories of the people who came before her.
Back in 2022, I wrote a post, accompanied by photographs, about her and some of her "great" relatives. At that time, her family connections included an uncle, a great-uncle, a great-great-uncle and, for a short time, even a 3 x great-uncle! To visit that post Here
Her response was priceless:
"So I am great, great, great Minnah!!"
Clearly, she had been taking notice of all the family history talk!
Recently, I came across a little note she had written. It was a wonderful reminder that all those stories, names and connections she had been hearing over the years had found their way into her own understanding of our family.
That little note inspired her to take things a step further. She decided to prepare her own family history, recording the people and connections that were important to her.

And perhaps this is what family history is really about. It isn't just about dates, names and dusty records. It is about the stories we share, the people we remember and the connections that bind one generation to the next.
Mum passed her research on to me. I have continued the search, and now, in her own way, my great-granddaughter is beginning to tell the story too.
It seems the family history has found another keeper.
A Little Help Along the Way
This blog has been a little family collaboration of its own. Minnah’s curiosity, her wonderful collection of family connections and her enthusiasm for our family stories have provided much of the inspiration. And, with a little help from ChatGPT, I have been able to bring those ideas and memories together and shape them into the story you have just read. The research, memories and family stories are ours — ChatGPT has simply helped us find the words to tell them.
